Richie Walker Aquathlon – Cronulla, Australia
Welcome to the Cronulla Triathlon Club’s 34th Richie Walker Memorial Aquathlon (RWA) held on 8 February 2020. This event was designed to honour much-liked club member Richie who passed away from a heart condition and to bring all abilities into one event for a good cause. All profits are donated in Richie’s name to The Heart Foundation assisting their research into the causes and cures of heart disease.
This year’s race will again be held in the beautiful surrounds of Gunnamatta Park and Bay. The swim leg for those events with a 1000m swim is in Gunnamatta Bay, starting on the shoreline of the bay beside the swimming baths. The swim leg all other events are held wholly within the enclosed baths for the safety of our younger competitors, and for the highly reduced water depth. The run is cross country style, all within the boundaries of Gunnamatta Park.
New this year, an ENTICER event has been added consisting of a 500m swim and 3.3km run. As mentioned above, the swim for this event is contained within the baths with the hopes of attracting those new to aquathlons or not quite ready for the open distance. This event is open to anyone 17 years of age or older.
This year, the RWA is proud to be host to ITU Youth A, Youth B and Junior Aquathlon Championship, TriNSW Aquathlon Championship as well as serve as a qualifier for the 2020 ITU World Championships held in Amsterdam in September 2020. You may notice small changes this year in the age group categories on registration, however this is to comply with the ITU age groupings.
