Goshen Gallop – Goshen, VT

The Goshen Gallop originated in 1978 from the idea that Blueberry Hill Inn ought to host an event in the summer to match our annual winter event, the American Ski Marathon. In the early years the race took the runners through the roads of Goshen only, incorporating the ever famous and very steep Carlisle Hill known as “Goshen Heartbreak Hill”. Sometime in the early 80’s it was decided to make the Goshen Gallop a trail race, using the Blueberry Hill cross country ski trails and a few of Goshen’s rugged gravel roads. The course remains the same to this day, and has challenged and rewarded generations of runners from New England and beyond; due to its elevation profile and defensive running on tough terrain it was coined as the “toughest 10.2K in New England”.

Over the years the Goshen Gallop has been held through every variety of weather elements–from the “mud run” in the 90’s, to high humidity, threatening thunderstorms, to low humidity and dust. Always held the 3rd Saturday of July, the Goshen Gallop is decidedly the event of the summer. For 30 years the philosophy of the Goshen Gallop has been to stress the fun of the event by including great music, fantastic food and celebrated friendships.

Now in its 41st year, the Goshen Gallop course still takes the runner on those same gravel roads and cross country trails through the Moosalamoo National Recreation Area of the Green Mountain National Forest with fabulous views from the South end of Hogback – rated as one of the best views in Vermont.

By participating in the Goshen Gallop you’re contributing to a great cause – the restoration of a piece of the Green Mountain National Forest. In 2011, Hurricane Irene destroyed two key river crossings. To repair this damage, proceeds of this year’s Goshen Gallop will be used to replace two bridges and to fix surrounding trails, allowing visitors to ski over to Romance Mountain. These repairs will also help solidify a new relationship with the National Forest Service in 2019. This partnership will give us more support in the never-ending effort to maintain our trails, and help keep the mountains behind Blueberry Hill Inn accessible to the public for all seasons.
